  • Classic Navy and Fun Fuschia

    November 10, 2012 | Posted By: | Summer · Weddings |

What a powerful combination of color!  A classy and bright palette really elevated the “wow factor” for this wedding at the Peabody Essex Museum.  The bride’s draped and shirred dress beautifully complemented the delicate ruffly peonies and bright blush garden roses in her bouquet.  Some sweet peas and a little ‘something blue’ was tied with a handle of ivory lace to coordinate with her gown.

The photographer for this wedding, Channing Johnson, beautifully captured not only the wedding, but got some great detail shots of the beautiful flowers.  We loved this shot of the groom’s boutonniere wrapped in black grosgrain ribbon–it perfectly sets off the white blossom against the lapel.

    Willowdale in Summer

    November 4, 2012 | Posted By: | Summer · Weddings |

Jacqui and Josh were married this July at the Willowdale Estate.  What is always surprising about the Willowdale, is their variety of spaces; no two weddings are alike.  The lush gardens and beautiful flagstone pavilion lets the celebration take the stage and provides that beautiful, natural background we love.  Soft and lush definitely describes the look and color palette of the bouquets and arrangements.  Soft ivory, pale peach, and some lovely coral blooms with touches of fresh mint green give a balanced and romantic feeling to the bride’s bouquet.

The plump, velvety petals of white orchids, ivory garden roses, and even a cally lily or two definitely combine for a soft and beautiful bouquet.

The bridesmaids’ bouquets showed all the lovely peach, corals, and dusty rose that complemented the bride’s bouquet.  We also added some scabiosa and poppy pods for a bit of sage coloring and some great texture.

Since details are our specialty, check out the treatment of the bride’s bouquet handle.  We have a great collection of vintage lace and antique ribbons and pearl-head pins that adds to the uniqueness of the arrangements.

The color scheme carried into the reception arrangements, too, and we liked the pretty mint green runners.  These colors just work!  The low arrangements give the tables an intimate feeling.

    Lush Habitat Wedding in Belmont

    October 16, 2012 | Posted By: | Weddings |

What an incredible affair–a small wedding at the Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary in Belmont, Massachusetts.  The setting perfectly framed the garden-style feeling for the couple’s nuptials.  From the handmade wreath of flowers on the iron gate to the aisle lined with wildflowers leading to a grapevine floral arched arbor (plus some tiny but lovely details) made for a lush, elegant, and natural wedding.  The formal gardens, the mansion, and wild nature surrounding it all allowed the Petalena touch to thrive–and beautifully, it did.

    Autumn is in the air…

    October 5, 2012 | Posted By: | Autumn · Weddings |

We thought we’d take a look back to one of our October weddings from last year to keep our creativity going and to really enjoy the beauty of autumn.  This wedding took place at the Commander’s Mansion in Watertown, Massachusetts.  This historic home, built just after the Civil War, was the perfect setting for a lovely outdoor ceremony and reception.  All photography by Aurora de Luca.

Lovely, deep maroon dahlias are the stars in the bridesmaids’ bouquets.

The bridesmaids bouquets incorporated deep shades of maroon, fresh greens, and pale fuschias.  The bride held a bunch of elegant rust colored Calla lilies, the perfect complementary color.

Entry table with pumpkins and dried wheat with lavender.

On each table at the reception were bunches of dried wheat with lavender that the guests could take with them and enjoy long after the wedding.  The pumpkins and autumn squashes continue the color palette of the season.

Nature’s stunning display of dahlia in bloom, with variegated tips.

With the textural wheat centerpieces were these lovely little gems.  These variegated dahlias in transparent bud vases give a nod to the historical feeling of the mansion with the fluted, delicate glass and keep the feeling of the reception romantic, but stunning.

    We are feeling inspired already!

    When it rains…

    August 14, 2012 | Posted By: | Weddings |

Bring the party indoors!  Natalie and Andy didn’t let the weather rain on their parade wedding.  After some unforeseen meteorological events, they kept their celebration going under a tent and thoroughly enjoyed every moment.

The bride’s bouquet was filled with dusty rose and peach tones mixed with some bright greens and delicate white peonies.

Her bridesmaids wore a lovely strawberry pink dresses that complemented the lovely pink peonies and warm yellow pops of color in their bouquets.  This color scheme was carried through to their reception tables, where each arrangement incorporated slightly different flower varieties and colors.  Some tables even had some small satellite arrangements.  We love the chalkboard tags!

We also have to show the groom and his manly groomsmen some love with a closeup of the boutonnieres.  The groom’s was wrapped with a rough twine, that gave the single, pristine rose of the lightest blush some masculinity.  The groomsmen brought on the color!

From these photos, you can tell this couple know how to have fun.  Their love of color just works–and we wish that same happy brightness to follow them into their future!

A peek at the Fairmont Copley ballroom…

    May 30, 2012 | Posted By: | Weddings |

We had the great opportunity to design the florals for a lovely couple celebrating their nuptials at the Fairmont Copley ballroom.  The beautiful details of the venue–intricate carved cornice ceiling, mirrored arched doorways, lush drapery from floor to ceiling–set off the equally lush florals and exquisite table settings.

The rich plum, magenta, and lilac colors created an elegant mood for the reception.  To keep conversations going, the table arrangements were elevated in tall, vintage cut glass vases with silverplate details.  They added just the right unique touch to this romantic reception.  White and lavender tea roses and shades of hydrangea perfectly complimented the luxury of the venue and captured the vision of the bride and groom.

    Blushing Blooms

    March 31, 2012 | Posted By: | Weddings |

Soft corals, blush pinks, and butter yellows were the theme of the day for Emily and Carson’s wedding.  White beautyberry and tea roses added texture that made the florals stunning.

The bride's bouquet. Photo by Simply Bloom Photography LLC.

The vintage lace incorporated into the handgrip added a uniqueness that set off the soft hues of the bouquet.  For the Maid of Honor, large soft yellow blooms complemented her pale blush silk gown.

Row markers and table arrangements had their own special touches.  The outdoor wedding was perfect for staked iron harps to hang small mason jars filled with the pastel beauties!  Smaller jars carried over into the table arrangements with single types of blooms in each.  A cluster sat upon slices of tree trunks of branded with C + E in a heart.  What romance!

Exotic Style in Magentas and Oranges

    January 9, 2012 | Posted By: | Weddings |

Photos from one of our most lovely and exotic styled weddings with photography by Li Ward of Fat Orange Cat Studio. Our clients Jana and Bryan were a dream to work with. They had a strong sense of the style and the ‘feel’ that they wanted for their event but happy to hand the design over to us to play and work with.

Orchids were the florals for the day. We savor, absolutely savor these kind of weddings where we get order boxes of special by-the-individual-bloom orchid all packed like a gorgeous surprise, each one different from the next and ready to be crafted into a bouquet like the one we did above for Jana.

Peach, Yellow, and Ivories at Willowdale

Weddings at the Willowdale Estate are pretty magical affairs with the lovely historic mansion that has been lovingly restored to the beautiful tent at the rear of the property. For this wedding fete, we hoisted bright yellow and blue banners in the tent, evoking the groom’s Southwest upbringing with New England flowers.

Our bride collected gorgeous vintage containers from lots of sources, cut glass style goblets and votives – they were just perfect for the full lush summer blooms of Coral Charm peonies, Mock Orange, Juliet garden roses, and yellow tree peonies.

Thanks to Allie for being such a treasure to work with, to Willowdale for letting us work through the logistics of hanging the banners in their lovely tent, and to Avenna Studios for their beautiful documentation of the day!

    Hello Autumn!

    September 6, 2011 | Posted By: | Weddings |

We’re a little sad to see summer pass, but looking forward to all the lovely fall weddings we will be working on this year. Lots and lots in September and October – some jewel toned, some orange and browns, some local-sourced, some exotic-inspired. But, let’s kick off the new season with a lovely photo from a fall wedding last year by Blue Water Photography.

Wedding Bouquet by Petalena, 2010. Photo by Blue Water Photography.

Thanks to our lovely bride Sylvia for sending it our way. It was really a dreamy bouquet with painted fern, garden roses, dahlias, and loads of textures. A soft and neutral color palette that hinted towards fall with the brown cymbidium orchids and purple-burgundy smokebush.

    Local Flowers and Potted Herbs

    September 1, 2011 | Posted By: | Weddings |

August has been an amazing month for flowers and we’ve had a few great clients who requested locally sourced flowers right from the beginning of the design process. It’s wonderful to see this kind of change in how people want to eat (more local) transfer to the wedding area as well. As someone who has loved having a summer and fall vegetable CSA (shout out to Stillman’s Farm!) for several years now, this kind of request for local flowers really resonates. We worked with our bride to create unique summery bright centerpieces filled with local flowers and potted herb centerpieces that could live on long after the wedding.

Bride’s bouquet by Petalena and shoes. Photo by Geneve Rege Photography, 2011.

We got our hands on the most beautiful pale lavender-white clematis and a garden rose called “Chippendale” – the most beautiful peachy-pink color imaginable. I am in love with it.

Trio of images by Geneve Rege Photography, 2011. L: Herb Centerpieces, C: Bridesmaid Bouquet; R: Vintage Jar Centerpieces. By Petalena, 2011.

Love this trio of images from Geneve because it really shows off the color palette we developed with our bride:  purple-pink, magentas, and green with pops of yellow and peach.  The bridesmaid dresses were this lovely green-blue color that made the color of the flowers just pop! Such a great choice…

Herbed Centerpiece by Petalena, 2011. Photo by Geneve Rege Photography.

For our herb centerpieces we did a duo wire and rusticated terracotta container filled with thyme, oregano, lavender or rosemary. The balance of the containers were filled with local seasonal flowers portulaca, inpatients, and dianthus.

I hope these sweet little containers live on, I envision them perched on someone’s kitchen window, ready for an easy snip of thyme or rosemary to add to a dinner.

Vintage canning jars and bud vase arrangements by Petalena, 2011. Photos by Geneve Rege Photography.

I saved my favorite photos for last – each photo of the cut flower arrangements we did using local zinnias and dahlias. With touches of Queen Anne’s Lace and hydrangea too of course. I found this beautiful ribbon called “Pecan” and knew it would look just beautiful with the blue-green of canning jars, so we tied a length of it around each jar…a new favorite color combination!

All the beautiful imagery is courtesy of Geneve Rege Photography – a thousand thank yous!

Wonderful day of coordination by the fantastic Ms. Jennifer Cox of Esq. Events

Gorgeous location, who wouldn’t love it? Commander’s Mansion, overseen by Rae Grassia

A special thanks to the couple, especially our bride, Katharine – we had so much fun working with you on the vision for the day, you were such a treat to work with!

    Garden Style at Gibbet Hill

    August 7, 2011 | Posted By: | Weddings |

Darlings, this wedding season is whizzing by and we’ve been remiss in not posting so many lovely weddings from the past two months. So, we’re playing a bit of catchup! We’re really pleased to share these gorgeous photos by Lexi Photography of a wedding we worked on together in June.

This was our first wedding at the Barn at Gibbet Hill and the day couldn’t have been more beautiful. Breezy, blue skies, dramatic rolling old farm pastures surrounding the barn,  and a lovely, lovely couple.

We did the softest, most blush and lush bouquet for our client Casey in soft ivories, pale pink, and barely yellow, and lovely little garden accents like French lilac, mint, and scented geranium foliage.

Bouquet by Petalena. Photo by Lexi Photography.

Bouquet by Petalena. Photo by Lexi Photography.

Those beautiful inky-centered blush ranunculus and anemones are enough to get lost in, aren’t they?

For the bridesmaid bouquets, the overall color palette of the wedding – tonal purples with soft ivory and green touches really came into play and worked beautifully off the soft grape hued dresses.

We couldn’t forget about the guys…a little splash of purple for boutonnieres with scabiosa and lavender roses, played off their cooler hued purple-blue ties:

Groomsman’s Boutonniere by Petalena. Photo by Lexi Photography.

For the reception florals and decor, we have to give major props to our clients who added a lot of lovely thoughtful elements that they created themselves like mason jar votives wrapped with twine and personalized favors that really added beautiful touch.

Table flowers featured two styles, one a brushed nickel lantern surrounded by sweet bud vases; and the other, pomanders of hydrangea or roses a lot small pedestals procured by the bride.

Cocktail arrangements were simple mason jars filled with local flowers and surrounded by candles:

And we had to include this great image of the table favors, and just say ‘Thank you!’ to Casey and Tony for letting us be part of your beautiful, beautiful day. And, for even more great photos of the event, take a stroll over to Lexi Photography’s blog post for the whole story. Thank you again Lexi!

Lovely, lovely at the Boston Public Library

    July 28, 2011 | Posted By: | Weddings |

We wanted to share some of the beautiful photographs of photographer Kelly Dillon of a wedding we did together in May at the Boston Public Library. My favorite color palette so far this season – what can I say? I am spring girl at heart!

Centerpieces for this lovely wedding were in a color palette of soft apricot and coral with greens and soft beiges to neutralize and soften the palette. The couple found lots of beautiful antique books and personalized each one with an inscription to each wedding guest.

The ridiculously huge beautiful flower in this photo – a variety of peony called “Coral Charm” might be my all-time favorite flower. When it first opens, it is a lovely bright coral-pink color but as it opens over a few days it softens so apricot and then pale, pale yellow before dying.

Bouquets were in a slightly softer color palette (none of the coral touches) with a bit more apricot from parrot tulips and soft pink with Sarah Bernheart pale pink peonies. Just loved making these bouquets with the colors and textures…
